The Untouchables - step sequence

Suspense is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions”.
When I watched the untouchables step sequence a variety of different shots were used by the camera in order to convey suspense and drama for its audience .As the scene progresses cross cutting was used between the protagonist and the pram , going down the stairs . Also we see that a clock is being used to signify urgency of time and perhaps that something improtant is about to happen . Loads of camera shot types were used , in the baby pram scene when it was falling down , one being a close up of the wheels which could mean that the wheels are the life saver of the baby . Secondly a point of view shot is used to convey the perspective of the man and the baby , that two unbiased views are being given . In the beginning of the scene we see the protagonist watchig the woman with the pram , because he wants to see if the people around are going to help , when he sees that no-one is going to give a helping hand ... he offers to help out bu this results in some consequences . When suspense starts to build up the long takes become progrsssively shorter , this is to create a sense of importance , that something dangerouse will happen , we see one short take between the gun shots and the man letting go of the pram ... with the baby oblivious to the fact that it might day at any pint during this process . No music is used for one reason - there is no need for it ! . As the other man starts to shoot the protagoinst we see that the camera angle becomes low , which makes the main person seem dominant and strong . One final part that I want to analyse is that of the woman who takes the pram up the stairs during that whole time the camera does not move forward or do anything ! ... we dont know the real reason behind this , but it could be because the director wants the audience to suggest that the pram is important and that it must be saved .

ms wigley - film trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjj_sGlpC9U - The chronicals of narnia .
There are several trailer conventions present within this trailer , firstly I see the institutions name , which is very important as it lets the audience know who has made this film in the first place . Secondly that a narrators voice is being used to illustrate each part of the trailer , and to let the audience get a feel for what the whole film is about . There is also some on screen text which relates to each part of the narrative ' there is hope ' hope of finding something that is extremely important .Until the audience finishes the trailer ... the title of the film is not given until the very end , creating drama and suspence as the audience want to know what this new film is called . The film has come from previous successful films of Narnia . Perhaps this is why people go to watch the film .

How does the trailer use media language (camera, mise-en-scene, editing, sound) to the establish the film's genre?
The trailer comprises of a series of short takes ,followed by long takes which helps in the build up of the narrative . The camera mainly focuses on the protagonists , which highlights how important they are in telling the story . The use of sound has an overall effect .... quite gospel like in order to reflect the genre fantasy , which this trailer depicts across very successfully . Mise en scene - all the protagonist wear quite old fashioned body armour , suggesting that they are about to fight something or someone , the use of archery within one of the scenes can suggest that the film may have aspects of violence built within it , but very subtly has been shown ... therefore a younger target audience is able to watch this fantastic film . A series of fades from one scene to the next have been placed during the editing , which could suggest that the overall scene could come from a young teenagers dream .
Some mythical characters such as the black bore could represent strength and power . That these three kids are being guided along a dangerous task and need some protection .

Who is the target audience and how do you know?
The target audience is very obvious , mainly children aged 7 upwards . I know that this is the target audience because the trailer uses a talking mouse ,lion and bore etc , which children that young can identify with and be drawn towards . Perhaps families could also watch the film . The trailer could attract young teenagers , as they like fantasy themed films.

How effective do you think the trailer is in promoting the film? Why
I think that the trailer is very effective in promoting the film , because it shows the most important elements such as the protagonists .This is important because the audience would want to know who is acting in this film .

New moon - cover work

1. What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
There are several techniques that this film trailer uses in order to captivate its audience , firstly the use of non  diagetic music that is goes from really low pitch to very high pitch , helps to move the narrative forward in time . Secondly the use of fade out shots help the audience to see different parts of the film in time . The protagonists themselves, are very well known character that have appeared in other films, therefore the audience would want to watch the film because they know the protagonists that have been used. The use of the word ' worldwide best seller' makes the audience feel that this film is special and is one not to miss . The use of silence also connotes that the storyline is serious , and that Edward is about to commit to something dangerous that could cost his life .  The target audience is broad , as in teenagers mainly would watch it but also adults that are interested on gothic and dark romance films, and books would want to watch this film .
2. How is gender represented in this trailer?

The representation of gender is the main line of success behind this film .
Firstly the audience sees that the main protagonist is Bella , who has become torn due to Edward leaving her for the Volturi .He is seen to be powerful ,as he does not let Bella go with him to this dangerous Italian place . Which creates consequences for Bella , - she starts to imagine that Edward is in places such as the school ground when he is not , she has screaming fits as he love life has been torn apart from her . Thankfully Jacob comes along to save her - he can be portrayed as the saviour of Bella's problems .... As she drowns herself in the sea , Jacob comes and picks her up .... making him look like a very caring friend . He may also want to build up a love relationship with her , successfully he does this throughout the trailer .

3. What target audience would be attracted to this film?
Based on this trailer alone, the target audience would be 13+ , because the depiction of very sexy males in the trailer makes a girls heart pound and become excited . Furthermore Edward's six-pack has been shown in this trailer, which creates a sense of being in the real world , because most girls love to have a partner with a good body shape and good looks . Men could also be attracted to this film, due to the use of werewolves and violence, which in now days is what guys love the most . Some of the violence used is created through CGI , which the situation seem very realistic, as werewolves are very powerful – also Jacob is a werewolf which makes him seem like a powerful creation .

4. What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer?
The main Hollywood values that can be identified in this trailer are the idea of worshipping the idol . The Voluturi can be seen to be the idol in this film because , they are the power behind Edward . The media constantly surrounds these starts ‘Edward ,Isabella and Jacob’ whenever the film is out .The audience sometimes watches the film over and over again which cant be normal thing for humans to do ! . .

Textual analysis -ghd

Codes & Conventions of advertising: What techniques does the ad use to persuade the audience to purchase GHD straighteners?
The advert uses successful techniques in order to persuade the audience to buy them . Firstly the use of 'thou' meaning you ... i.e that you must buy these straighteners , as they are the best for your hair .Furthermore the women used are very beautiful therefore are put as role models for the audience to buy the straighteners ... as they will become just as pretty . The use of sound , which is quite haunting ... therefore draws the audience in to buying the product . The ten commandments that are used can be very offensive to Catholic people , as they follow what the Holy Bible says . Therefore to portray women going against the 10 commandments may cause an up rise . The different types of hair styles, that can be done with the straighteners also entices the audience to buy the product . The company has used voice over to make the advert seem powerful and to push the narrative forward.

Representation: How is gender represented in the ad?
Women are seen to be quite powerful in this advert , they are the dominating females as opposed to the normal males that we are used to seeing dominating the t.v ads . The two women used are portrayed , to be quite strong as they fight each other in one of the scenes. The women are seen as seductive due to the clothes that they wear - which is hardly anything ! .... thus making them seem very sexual in order to grab the mans attention .

. Media Institution: What issues of regulation and censorship does this ad raise and what does it tell us about the values of the channels on which it was broadcast?
Well firstly the use of the 10 commandments will offend many strict Catholics that follows the religion , and perhaps Catholics that are not so strict . Therefore may people may have phoned in to complain about that issue , and the advert can actually be banned because of it . However the channel E4 normally broadcasts adverts like this after 9pm watershed, when the younger children are not watching t.v anymore .But E4 could have easily kept the advert on before that time , as the company is private and not regulated by the government .
The fact that the advert was still broadcast, even though many Catholics will have found it offensive shows how weak people are .

4. Audience: On the basis of this ad, who does the GHD brand appeal to?
This advert obviously targets women , who are in the class B or above band . The straighteners themselves are expensive ,therefore women from a lower social class may not be able to afford the cost price .The straighteners themselves, can create different styles of hair do's in a very short space of time .
