ms wigley film trailer conventions :)

Notes on film trailer conventions :
on screen text , music ,names of the director, title of the film and release date , voice over ,names of the actors.
The film trailer Slumdog Millionaire uses several film trailer conventions . Firstly we see the list of awards that this film has won . Then following from this we see text being placed on the screen just like the quiz show who wants to be a millionaire does , this makes an audience question which answer is correct . The institutions behind the make of the film are also presented as warner brothers , therefore an audience might be more interested in seeing this film as the institution is quiet respectable. The film uses contrapunctual sound which switches from one scene to the next depending on whether the scene is dramatic or haunting . Some scenes are haunting by the use of lighting ,only parts of Jamal Malik's face are revealed not all of it . The music does become celebratory towards the end when Jamal Malik wins two things - the girl of his dreams and the quiz show . The voice over of the protagonist is used effectively to push the narration forward ' I did the show because I thought that she would be watching ' . Reviews from newspapers suggest that the film is brilliant and a must see , therefore the audience is drawn into watching this film .The trailer is quiet fast paced , therefore does not really tell the audience the whole plot line of the film . Snippets of the film are used instead to entice the audience to watch it . The title of the film is only revealed at the end , which makes the audience suspicious of what the film is really about . The film does present alternative ideologies because the setting is in India ; a place where a normal film would not normally be made .Furthermore alternative ideologies are present because of the culture of the people and their clothing is presented . The release date does say coming soon , therefore audiences start to question when it will come out ! .
The trailer film spotting is very boring for several reasons ..... it does not reveal who made the film or the institution or when the release date is all key aspects of promoting a film . However it does use voice over effectively CHOOSE YOUR .... in order to tell the audience what the film is a little bit about . The on screen text is too basic and makes it look like an amateur kid has done it instead of a director. The narration is faced paced therefore reveals a bit too much about the film .

Based on both trailers I think that Slumdog Millionaire would be more succeful as a film , because it does appeal to a wide target audience , and uses the typical girl meets boy scenario although the way this is put together is very successful .

contemporary film trailer :) .

Contemporary film trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apK7bnczftI
Media Forms:
The use of the narration of the mans voice that tells the audience what the film is about ; ‘warner brother invites you’ , is the technique that tries to attract the audience to see the film .The audience can immediately relate the word invite to connote that they are special .The spinning of the warner brother logo to represent how the chocolate twirls around , this makes the audience’s mouths water and hence makes them more eager to see the film .The chocolate twirling around is mainly the theme of the film ,and realtes to the title of the film ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory .
Media Representations:
The protagonist Willy Wonka , seems to look powerful by his huge factory that he owns . When he is walking through the gates of his factory , the people in the film seem to be amazed by his creations .He could also be seen as a funny character , with his use of wit and sarcasm ‘I can see that’ in order to make the audience laugh .Charlie is another protagonist which represents what children dream of in the real world ,as every child dreams of chocolate and sweets .
Media Audiences:
The film mainly attracts audiences of a younger age group –7-13 , as the trailer comprises of lots of colourful backgrounds .The film will not bore this audience but entice them to come and watch the film .However the film is a remake of an older film , therefore it could attract an older target group who may have children (families) and even the elderly.
Media Institutions:
The main Hollywood characteristic  present in the trailer is the idea of competition, and that the world is full of competition  for the best things in life. The child himself doubts that he will find a ticket ,but with a stroke of luck he manages to find one golden ticket ;although his family is from a poor background ;Presenting alternative ideologies .

Ms Wigley - blade runner

The film trailer Blade runner uses a wide variety of shot types in order to create thrill and suspense for the target audience .  One of  the scenes uses a long shot ,whereby the mad guy comes in to torment the police officer whilst inside the building , that scene particularly creates some sort of mystery . An extreme long shot has been used from the top of the roof with the TDK sign attached to a building  , the colours of this sign are in red which connotes danger  and white which glamorises a horror scene. A landscape shot has been used for the opening scene which establishes , where the actors shall be performing .Although as an audience , we do not see the actors from the start of the video clip , this creates suspense and an urgency for us to want to know, what shall be happening next . A point of view shot , is used when the police officer looks at the blade runner , ready to run ... then the camera shifts towards that scene where the man has just been looking ; in order to run . Medium shot, of the two men talking to each other ,which creates a sense of harmony for the audience . An extreme close up of the bladerunners face with blood upon it which denotes a murder.
2 low angle shots are used , one of the man standing on the roof top , and the other when the bladerunner jumps from one building to the next .Both of those scenes used together show the power of the blade runner and the police officer . A high angle shot with birds eye shot are simultaneously used in the very beginning of the scene , when the man is hanging onto an object of some kind ,clinging on for his life . When the white dove is released , a low angle shot has been used , to create freedom .
High angle shot of the police officers face ,whilst he is lying on the floor , this makes him look like a slave .

Mise en scene .
A range of pyrotechnical equipment has been used successfully , in order to create a thriller .
Firstly Smoke machines have been used in the background , from behind the officer , smoke connotes danger and a horror scene . A revolver has also been used , which continually goes round and round , perhaps this signifies that there is no hope , that life is bleak and has no real end to it . Another interpretation could be that the revolver symbolises new hope , for the man who is an alien .
Rain to symbolise the tears of damnation on the blade runners face , also to connote unhappiness and fear of threat . Use of dark blood on the blade runners face , to make him look scary and fearful . At the end of the scene ,there are police cars to denote that a crime has been commited. The white dove denotes purity and hope.

Filler light is used within the man on the edge of the rooftop ,which softens the shadows of the scene (@ 32 seconds ) . Use of back light and filler light from behind the blade runner to make him look dark and evil.
Dark , low key lighting is used between the blade runners face pointing downwards, and the release of the dove .

Musical score used in the blade runner is powerful classical music ,comprising of trumpets ,flute, drums and bells ,which is also the theme tune for the film . Perhaps this use of non diagetic sound wanting to create suspense has been implemented successfully ,although the starting scenes do not contain this music . Sound of the gunshot ....which is connected to crime . The diagetic sounds used are the voices of the blade runner ,the police officer and the other police chief in the end .

The genres of the film are science fiction with action .

Ms Van Der Sanden - the articles

I don't know how ...but somehow I managed to log in :)

Anna Pickard has done an interview with Sam King ,who states that music is what he's made from .
She uses exaggeration to express how easy it is ,for youngsters ,to have music at their disposal.
Sam- young teenager is a teenager who wants to live like the 'stars' of music ,by setting up his own label .
Commercial acts are sponsored by companies not universal .
Sam the Junior has been sponsored by Sony Erickson to go to Ibiza . A contrast from his brother who sells the musical equipment to fund for his drugs .Anna criticises those who make short 3 minute videos , to get to STARDOM. Use of sarcasm 'we are sorry ,this video is not available in your territory :- criticises videos that can not be shown in this country .
Wired Magazine :
Biased viewpoint ,of what the Internet is really about .
David Wolman covers the story of Nick Carr : is google making us stupid . Its an opinionated view of how people can read any random garbage on the Internet ,and can be influenced easily into making a decision .
Baulerin - Internet ,video games and IM's all serve to numb and dumb .... do they really do this ? , where is the real proof to back up this point .
Vaccines cause autism - just trying to scare people, not in the medical profession, into believing manic fake scientific claims .... vaccines do not by any means cause autism !! .
The web, can provide a host of biased opinions of people ,who know know nothing about real evidence, from reputable and trusted sites .
The incorrect use of technology, can lead people to be opinionated 'Antirational junk ,though has gained social respectability in the United States ,during the past half century ' this shows how irrational American people can be .
The Internet ,can be used for research ,and to make the world more productive 'digital technologies makes us more productive '.
The people that write useful information ,is what is needed ,but ultimately its up to us to decide what is truth from lies and bias .

Ms Wigley - Kill Bill (not yet finished )

There are several aspects to consider whilst watching any movie ! : mise en scene , sound - diagetic and non diagetic ,editing and genre. Within the film kill bill the aspects of mise en scene can be followed by freeze framing a particular scene an analysing its importance for example :- in the beginning of the kill bill scene we see that the main character who is wearing a yellow outfit fit for fighting picks up a very sharp and powerful sword . The connotation of a sword are that the person holding it is ready to fight a battle , in which case kill bill is the perfect example of . When holding a sword the audience immediately notices the power and dominance of what the character portrays . The Geisha is seen to be wearing traditional clothing which symbolises her lpove and passion for her culture . As we progress through the scene , we a slow motion of the axe going round and round , again connoting that something dangerouse and out of the ordinary is about to happen . As the fight progresses between the protagonist and the agents   , we see the camera shift to the sword whereby some blood is seen to be dripping of the sword ... again this rouses fear for the audience who know that the connotation of blood symbolises death .
The foley artists use of non diagetic sound within the fighting scene has been succecfully applied ... the sharp sound of the sword makes the audience realise that the particular scene will progress into a blood bath whereby only the protagonist survives. A sound bridge has been succefully applied ... as an audience we hear the doppler effect of the motorcycle in the background to the progression of the sound of footsteps , again as an audience we can anticpate that something bad will happen .
The use of diagetic sound has been applied within the beginning of the scene whereby we hear the dialogue between the geisha and the girl in the yellow suit , a task has obviously been set : to defeat everyone in the black jackets on her own ( protagonist) which she does succefully toward the end of the scene.

Ms Van Der Sanden - Film genres homework

http://www.movietome.com/most_popular.html - According to this website I found out that the most popular film genre for 2010 is suspense/ thriller . I think that this particular film genre is the most popular due to the use of advanced technology such as the use of CGI , animation and voice overs that are made louder during the editing stages of that particular film . More people are being driven into suspense /thriller films as they provide the most form of entertainment to the young generation of today .

The rise of colour film technology in the 1930's bought the so called 'Golden age of Hollywood ' , with a popularity of film genres such as : gangster films, musicals, newspaper-reporting films, historical biopics, social-realism films, lighthearted screwball comedies, westerns and horror . I think that these particular film genres were popular because people during that era had just witnessed a new style of film making - colour technology therefore a rise in the number of people watching certain genres of film went up , people wanted to see something new that would bring some kind of entertainment . Such as horror , people wanted suspense in a film in order to keep their attention and bring a sense of excitement.

Due to the ongoing war , the film industry decided to launch films that were war based which makes sense seeing as a real life battle war happening during that time (1940's) .

Ms Wigley - cover work . (updated version) :)

The kick trailer comprises of a variety of different shot types which are placed together to create a 'thriller' effect . In the beginning of the trailer , we see a close up shot of the girl with a photo of a guy in her hand this symbolises her passion and obsession with him . As we progress through the trailer , shots such as the footballer with his hand on the car , with his hand moving incredibly slowly over the roof symbolises his drive for something important. There is a close up shot of the blonde teenager spying into a small hole to get a view of her 'lover' ,or perhaps she is peering into the future of her boyfriend .

The genre is a romantic thriller because the editing is quite slow , the overall trailer is quite mysterious and haunting , again we do not know the reason behind the girls obsession with the footballer , we could say that she is bisexual because her friend kisses her passionately and dances with her as if they were going out . The car scene with both girls and the guy inside , is romantic because we see the blond girl's hand entwined with the guy's hands a moment of jealousy from the blond girls friend , as her eyes peer down towards the hands . Confusion is cleverly created by the ways the scenes are placed in a non linear fashion, however the trailer does follow Todorovs theory because the beginning of the trailer starts with an equilibrium - the girls extreme close up view of her visage with her holding the photo of the footballer .Then followed by a disequilibrium - the blond girl shoots somebody within the scene ....her hands are shaking emphasising her shock of what she has just done - murder someone , but we do not know who she has actually murdered .. it could be the footballer or it could be her friend ( girl with black hair). Then the equilibrium is the end of the trailer when the repetition of ' we love you Liverpool , we do ' with just sound rather than  moving image .
The trailer itself is very powerful as it comprises of different narrative techniques which engage the audience from the very beginning of the trailer right through to the end . A shot which particularly uses a beautiful environment setting , is the sun setting down with the two girls at the top of the hill , the director obviously decided to use an extreme long shot to emphasise the importance of friendship , and how easily friendships can be destroyed .

The sound type comprises of both diagetic and non diagetic forms , the non diagetic forms in the kicks advert is the romantic music that is played at certain intervals within the trailer such as the scene where the two ladies are standing together on the hill. The diagetic sound is the dialogue of each character , each dialogue within the trailer tells us more about the characters personality ..... the blond girl for example shouts stop and uses a gun to emphasise how angry and jealous she is .
We hear the blond girl whispering ' we love you Liverpool ... we do ' suggesting that she is really not a normal person , she is a person with an obsession towards the Liverpool club .
