Media Conference summary of notes

Chewing gum for the brain :
This conference was about how mislead people are into the media , and how the education system in Britain views media as a subject of negative perspective .
Firstly a projection of our much loved favourite idiot Homer Simpson is said to represent Media studies as a subject for those who are not 'clever' enough when it comes to subjects such as maths and science . People often are mislead yet again by crazy news reports about how media graduates can not get a job , they only end up becoming clerks or cooks .Yet again this places misjudgement into our heads as we become worried over whether Media Studies is regarded as a serious subject . Even Universities such as the London School of Economics have completely rejected media studies as a subject for those applying to that University ... the university Admin staff state that its a sh*t subject . Even stating that its a pseudo science ! .

To be honest this is not the case .....
Frank and Queenie Leavis were the first people to place an importance toward Media Studies through advertisements .... and we see to many of those these days to make us fall asleep in front of the T.V ! .

If no-one knows what Facebook and Twitter are then they need to do some quick research ! , these two giants have revolutionised the way in which we keep in contact with what is around us ( our environment) ...from music ,television ,chatting .... to posting pictures of places and people . They are both forms of what we call web 2.0 .
Yet again the BBC news states the negativity of Facebook and Twitter by broadcasting that it is a dangerous website for young people (11-18) to be on , as people posing as others could easily mislead us ! ..... true if your that dumb to talk to people you do not know ! .

Convergence is the media ! so whats all this madness behind people who state that media  is a so called fake subject ! . Without it we are not here in the 21st century .... but perhaps the days when there was no such thing as internet, television, radio, computers, gaming ,software management etc .....

ms v - advert for rbk .

50 cent banned advert. ‘ got shot 9 times’
1.How does the ad glamorise violence? (Consider mise-en-scene, shot type, camera angle, use of sound, editing)
The 50 Cent banned advert uses a variety of successful techniques in order to glamorize violence . The advert firstly begins with a train scene in the middle of the street . The emphasis that a train is being used whilst its moving in an incredible fast pace connotes the idea of a person’s life being taken in an instant . The sound of the train is loud therefore stating the danger of what a train can do if you were to be pushed into one by a bunch of hooligans who think that they are cool by killing other people to earn street credit.
The scene whereby the water drops of from the black wire , then transfers as if blood was dropping from somebody whose hurt in an accident , also the use of a police siren grabs our attention because we have thirst for the rest of the advert , however the use of sound of a young girl screaming in the background after 50 cents being shot for the first time would scare a younger audience watching the advert before the 9pm watershed.
50 cents voice over of being shot 9 times , makes us realise as an audience the dangers of crime within the UK and how its rapidly shooting up with the ease of getting a gun without a license at the age of 18 .
The colour contrast where 50 cent is sitting on a large box , with a dark background against his red jacket makes 50 cent seem involved with violent crimes perhaps in his past life or maybe that his upbringing  evolved along a crime based family , therefore 50 cent may have been in an environment that exposed him to what crime is like and he may have thought that this was the correct thing to do therefore involving himself with violent crimes to make him look ‘cool’ .
The news broadcaster voices being used really quickly to get the news across in American T.V and to the public , will impact those people who think that crime is cool when they are at a young age , and make them think twice before being involved in gangs around the streets.
The music used within the reebok advert is quiet simple and plain however highlights how simple it is to loose your own life due to being drawn into the wrong crowd .
The director of the advert has successfully applied certain camera angles toward the protagonist , firstly an extreme long shot is used when we see 50 cent on the table ,this is to create an effect of how scary he really is from a distance , we could imply that he would kill us on the spot . Then the camera zooms into 50 cent ‘s face to reveal how serious he is about violence and that he will never do it again for the 10th time.
2. Why would a global company like Reebok glamorise violence in this way? What do you think is their intention?.
Reebok has only one intention : to educate and warn people of our age group 16-18 that crime in the whole world is wrong , its dangerous and you could potentially be taking an innocent persons life away . They want us to realise that music superstars are just like us they are no different from us just because they are followed 24/7 and lead a rich life and are seen in a good light does not mean that they themselves have not had near death incidents . In this case Curtis James Jackson III  formally known by his stage name 50 cent is used as a product of crime because he had himself involved in feuds before and he did get shot at 9 times and luckily survived . Reebok does not wish to glamorise violence in a positive way but rather the opposite, they want us to view this advert and become more cautious of our own foolish gangster style behaviour that may involve us going to the hospital one day and not surviving from the first shot . Reebok wants us to be more politically aware of what knife and gun crime actually is ... its not glamorise its very dangerous ... hence the reason why so many police patrol the streets at night time in developed countries such as the UK because here its on the uprise and has not improved until recently the governments initiatives to tell people to hand over guns and knives in so called ‘bins’ .Reebok wants more of us (teenagers) to be those people who back down from gun crime and violence, and say to ourselves how can we become better people ? . We could turn the wrong path and continue like 50 cent and get shot 9 times , or we must do something to decrease this alarmingly dangerous trend.
3. Who is the target audience and how do you think they would be affected by the ideology of the ad?
The TA of this particular advert is teenagers because it them that seem to be on news headlines most of the time about stabbings and shootings .The ideas and beliefs behind this powerful and sorrowful advert is that we must be more aware of what dangers there are behind carrying a weapon with us for protection ,as carrying such things may lead to our ending of ourselves if we are the ones lurking on the streets on the middle of midnight trying to act tough and ‘rude’ . There is no way that we are tough and rude by taking each others lives ,its cowardice and murder .
Some teenagers may cry when they see the advert as a family member or fellow friend may ,have lost their delicate and youthful lives due to being a victim of crime attacks.

4. In your opinion, should the ad have been banned? Why/Why not?
To be honest I do think that the advert should have been banned , firstly it send out the wrong image of crime using 50 cent . 50 cent is an alternative representation of what crime is because he wants us to understand why we must never get involved in a mess like his past , which is cleverly referenced by his words ‘got shot 9 times’ .
Secondly younger audience such as 11 year olds may think that crime is cool because a famous rapper and artist got shot 9 times, therefore they are more likely to start violence from a young age thinking that its the correct thing when its not.
Thirdly the portrayal of the advert is really scary and may frighten us as a young audience due to the images such as the blood dropping , the train moving swiftly ,the gun shots, the news report ... the overall piecing of the advert sends out a reality check for us in a negative light .
The main endorsement of this advert is that 50 cent symbolises RBK new brand shoes , therefore anyone who wants to be like 50 cent has to wear those shoes . However it does not mean go out and kill people to be like 50 cent , because the advertisers want us to know that this is not the message to be carried forward in our heads.

Hwk part II - Ms Van der Sanden

SONYdifferent brands ownership :

It’s almost here. Sony have revealed their new range of HDTV’s that come complete with the anticiated and much discussed Google TV service integration. With their new range of TV’s, Sony are teaming up with Google to offer consumers the ability to connect to the internet and use services such as Twitter and YouTube and in the near future, to connect to Google’s Android Marketplace and access a vast range  of applications.
The Sony vaio laptops ....which are a major hit with the business people and those at university .
Microsoft Office is also owned as a product by Sony .
Digital SLR cameras are owned by Sony .Playstation which has taken over the world of gaming has also been a major hit over the past couple of years .Home theatre systems are also owned majorly by sony .
The Motorola phone and the Erisson phone names are .....boringly enough owned by sony .
Sony is a genuine global company with offices and manufacturing or distribution plants in all major countries. Its innovations are well known and the VCR, Walkman etc. would make it an important corporation in any study of the media industries. But it was Sony’s acquisition of CBS Records in 1988 and Columbia Pictures Entertainment in 1989 that announced a new strategy for the company.
With the purchase of MCA-Universal in 1986 by Matsushita (Panasonic, JVC etc.), this move signaled the strength of the fast-growing Japanese economy at a time of American downturn. Libraries of films and recorded music were now available to help Sony exploit its new consumer media technologies. However, the promised synergy has proved difficult to exploit, even with the launch of a third synergised technology, the Playstation in the mid 1990s.

PS3 sales rose 44% in its fiscal third quarter. Sales got a bump after Sony dropped the price by 25% to $299 in September for its model with an 80-gigabyte hard drive.
The company expects strong future sales for a number of its products. Sony said it can expand liquid-crystal-display television sales by at least 33% to 20 million units in the next fiscal year while maintaining profitability. Its electronics division has been hampered by a TV business that has lost money for five straight years.
In the future, Sony says it expects to see significant growth potential in the e-reader market. The company expects to sell more than one million units in the current fiscal year and sees that figure doubling or tripling in the next few years.

Homework ms wigley - magazine covers

This magazine is for Vogue , it has a lady with deep blue eyes on a background of flowers .
The magazine uses flowers as a symbol of peace and could also mean love ,further more the depp blue eyes could symbolise harmony and good will to people , it could also be a sign of sexuality as most people find blue eyes girls good looking . She is white which indicates purity .
The word Vogue for the magazine which is written in a posh font could connote that the intended target audience would be for those in the A-C1 class people thereby only those who earn good salaries can afford to buy it  everyday . The colour of the font is also pink ranges from different spectrums , which indicates a target female audience .The female is posing with her head slightly to the side of the flowers suggesting that she wants us to actually be interested in her and the topics that follow inside the magazine. The interpellation of this magazine is that it stand out from the crowd ,by  using various techniques and connotations such as the ‘new feminine ‘ which means that a female will be more confident if she is to see the tips inside the magazine . It could also mean a fresh start for a women out of a bad relationship and into a new one later on in her life .
This match magazine is mainly aimed at teenage boys 13+ , it uses bold font type for the title of the magazine to make it stand out , it also connoted that its a football magazine due to the word that is used which is match .It contains symbolic codes for example the sun rays used for the background .
Those sun rays highlight the champions which are the players from the different football clubs .The men used are photographs from games that have gone on before. The interpellation mainly constitutes of the men being happy and that they are the main ones to watch out for as they are the best players .
The magazine itself is quite simple in its layout however conveys the message that ‘we are from the makers of the best selling footy mag!’ which highlights the importance of what the UK football is all about ... being the best .
The colour choice for the title page is in red which symbolises danger, that these players are dangerous in the games. The black shadow on the title could state death , therefor the combination of black and red is that beware danger of death .
The football player in the Chelsea top uses his eyes and his finger gestures to connote that he is watching you ,or perhaps that he thinks a decision made was unfair .
The blue background on the ‘annual 2010 !’ could symbolise peace and harmony , or interpret it in a different way it would probably relate to the colour of the Chelsea football team.

Media Homework
Synopsis of slumdog millionaire :
A Mumbai teen who grew up in the slums, becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" He is arrested under suspicion of cheating, and while being interrogated, events from his life history are shown which explain why he knows the answers.
Storyline
The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's Kaun Banega Crorepati? (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?) But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains..

Sypnosis
The romantic comedy stars Hugh Grant as a washed up 80’s pop star has been, Alex Fletcher from the fictitious group PoP. With a failed solo album and some funky old moves, the charismatic and talented musician is managed by long time manager, Chris Riley (Brad Garret of Everybody Loves Ramon fame), and reduced playing small gigs at county fairs and amusement parks. He gets a big break when reigning pop diva Cora Corman (new comer Haley Bennett) invites him to write a duet for her new album. The problem is that Alex hasn’t written in years and they want the song by the coming Friday. While he’s still good at melody, the lyrics don’t come easy.
Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), his eccentric part time plant woman who has a flair with words. Having suffered a bad relationship with her ex-professor and newly famous novelist, Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott), she’s unwilling to collaborate with anyone. Over time and with some indirect fan-help in the form of Sophie’s sister, Rhonda (Kristen Johnston), Alex finally manages to convince Sophie to co-author the song with him. From there, the chemistry and romance blossoms at the piano and under it. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out the rest.

Slumdog Millionaire presents alternative ideology because it shows the audience of the downgraded streets of Mumbai, with a young boy growing up in the streets . He experiences a lot of unfortunate events including his brother becoming a killer . The young boy then grows up into a young man and enters a competition called ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ . Through the past events of his life , he is able to answer the questions correctly although later on is accused of being a cheat . He does win the quiz show, with later winning the love of a beautiful lady .
